This painting portrays a solemn moment of Taíno resistance, when, faced with enslavement by colonizers, some chose to consume poisonous yuca rather than surrender. The bitter cassava, prepared from a toxin that Taínos learned to remove through laborious processing, became a final act of agency and refusal. Around the fire, figures gather in a silent circle beneath the moonlit sky. Their glow holds mourning and dignity. It is both a farewell and a testament: a collective decision to preserve spirit over chains. This is a tribute to their courage, a landscape of mourning where choice echoes across time.
