Raices Del Carnaval
2025 · Acrylic and Sequins on Canvas
This piece reimagines the Diablo Cojuelo, a central figure in Dominican carnival known for its theatrical costumes and rebellious spirit. Traditionally adorned with feathers and mirrors, the headdress is transformed here using natural elements, connecting the figure back to the land. At her forehead is a piece of Dominican amber, a resin born from the extinct tree Hymenaea protera, known for its clarity and ancient fossil inclusions. Once treasured by the Taíno people, the amber serves as more than an ornament — it becomes a living relic, carrying memory, protection, and the ancestral soul of the island. With a sequined dress and a crown rooted in nature, this figure bridges celebration and ceremony. Gallery-wrapped on a 1.5" deep canvas, ready to hang without framing.
